Google is evil and facebook is bad….that is what it comes down to, especially when following german gazettes and journalists writing on this topic. Without saying neither google nor facebook have proven to be sensitive when it comes to understanding other societies preferences and the „demons“, as I want to call it, these societies are haunted by. In case of germany these demons would be, an extremly high level of risk aversion and need for regulations and order (I suggest a little reading on this in Kiss, Bow or shake hands ). It would be more adequate to try to understand why societies react in their certain way instead of expecting that they change their attitudes. By doing this one could actually benefit from this deeper understanding.

On the other hand, Germany has proven to often „überengineer“ and „überperfectionize“ things (Still one of my favorites: §14 (3) UStG. This reached a level of „perfection“ in transferring sixth VAT directive, which is neither helpful, nor necessary, but that’s another story).

Although there are good reasons to emphasize the importance of the „Datenschutz“ (i.e. the protection of privacy) – and I am actually very fond of a stricter view of this matter – I think there are still good reasons to take a step back and look at this topic from another angle, to gain more insight in what this might be all about.

First it is without a doubt necessary to have a codified level of privacy protection and be it just to avoid abusive use of personal information. It is the regulative responsibility of a democratic state to protect personal rights and to define the realm for companies in which they can act in compliance to law. If there would be no regulation, it would be extremley tempting to use the personal data colletcted in an inappropriate way, though this would be very shortsighted, as I want to show.

Painting the big picture

When people talk about social media websites, those websites are often seen as „communities“ oder „social networks“ and of cource a social thing, which is without a doubt true. But there is also a technological aspect of social media websites and that is, that they actually represent a special kind of software-as-a-service. And there are some empirically proven drivers that make people actually engage in SaaS Systems.

When writing my masterthesis (where I researched the impact of trust as a driver of the technology adoption of Software-as-a-Service solutions) I came along some really interesting research papers and dissertations. There was one researchpaper by german scientists Benlian, Hess and Buxmann (Benlian, A.; Hess, T.; Buxmann, P. (2009)), that did an empirical study on drivers of technology adoption of SaaS Solutions. They researched this by using three theoretical perspectives: The transaction cost theory by Coase (Coase, R. H. (1988)), the „ressource based“ approach by Penrose (Penrose, E. T. (1995)) and the theory of planned behaviour by Ajzen (Ajzen, I. (1981)). The results were pretty interesting.

Neither the ressource based approach nor the transaction cost theory were significant drivers to SaaS Adoption to SaaS Applications taken into consideration in general. They only had SOME significance to applications of a certain type.

On the other hand the theory of planned behaviour had subtantial significance throughout ALL application categories.

Let’ s have a look at what the theory of planned behaviour says, this will help understanding the processes that underly how people act. I will keep this short, consult References below to find further Info on the Theory of Planned Behaviour.

Source: Ajzen, I. (1991) S. 182

The attitude toward behaviour represents the subjective evaluation of the behaviour in question (for example „subscribing“ to an S-a-a-S Service). The evaluation may be positive or negative, thus influencing how one will behave.

The social norm is the social pressure to perform or not perform an action (like: „hey dude your not on facebook? Gee! What a douche“).

Perceived behavioural control is the users perception of how difficult it is to perform a certain behaviour. Earlier experiences are also taken into account, as well as anticipated obstacles and impediments.

These three factors lead to one’s intention to actually „do something“.

As you can see, getting people to actually „do things“ in SaaS Environments is to a huge portion driven by very soft factors.

Since the theory of planned behaviour is of psychological and sociological origin, it is very obvious that a SaaS Technology is more likely to be adopted, when addressing sociological and psychological factors, and not classical economic factors.

The dissertation of german scientist Ernestine Schafman (Schafman, E. (2000)) also supports this view. She shows very clearly that decision making is NOT driven by rational decision making and decision processes to a large extent. Rather emotions – and trust is also an emotion – drive decisions, be it in private oder business contexts. So it is very likely that trust does have a great impact on peoples attitude towards engagement in social networks for example.

So how can we create trust?

It is often suggested to create trust by supertight contracts and SLAs for example. Unfortunately it has been shown that these means do not CREATE trust, but are rather means to substitute trust by „legalistic remedies“. Sitkin and Roth (Sitkin, S. B.; Roth, N. L. (1993)) have shown though, that most of the times this does not work. And this of course also applies to the german „Datenschutzgesetz“.

Since legalistic remedies do not work, we are compelled to find other, working ways to generate trust. So Let us have a look at another interesting research paper by Mayer Davis (Mayer, R. C.; Davis, J.H. (1995)).

Mayer and Davis identify three major drivers that create trust:

Ability: I am gonna trust someone if I think he is actually able to do that he promises to do.

Benevolence: Do I believe that the one I am trusting in will act in my favor, i.e. he will do me good?

Integrity: Does the one I am trusting in adhere to a set of principles that I can accept?

But there is another moderator in Mayer and Davis concept called the „propensity to trust„. Everyone has a different level of willingness to trust someone. This is where societal factors, such as a societies’ „demons“, as mentioned above, come in.

So to create trust any company should maybe take these following into account.

First: Look who you are talking to and understand their „demons“.

Second: Show your competence.

Third: Do everything to show and PROVE to your audience, that you are going to act 100% in THEIR favor, to create a good attitude towards what you wish them to do.

Fourth: communicate the principles you are acting on, and most importantly, let them be defined by YOUR AUDIENCE. Give them BEHAVIOURAL CONTROL, and this means also ABSOLUTE control over their data.

Then automatically a Social Norm will develop, that will bring people to using your services, products, etc.

And to do so it is easier today than it ever was before. The social media provide us with all channels necessary to listen and learn to improve the way we run our businesses, and this even in a trustworthy way.

So what does this mean to the „Datenschutz“, the protection of data?

Since a law, can only provide a realm to act in, using company data protection policies in favour of the business has to be done in different ways.

Currently data protection is often seen as an inhibitor to business success. The behaviour of facebook reflected this quite obviously in the last months by introducing more than questionable handling of users profiles. Recently Steve Jobs and Apple showed tendency to do this this too, by introducing new terms and conditions for the Apple iTunes store. This actually comes a little shocking because in my personal view Apple used to be very high when it comes to Benevolence, Ability and Integrity.

If you take the argumentation conducted above, it is identified quite clearly, that data protection isn’t actually an inhibitor, but rather a value driver for your business, cause it will lead to trust and trust will influence peoples intentions to actually use your service. On the other hand, any kind of law made in this area has to provide grounds for enterprises to enable them to actually being able use data protection as a value driver. And so the „Datenschutzgesetz“ should be adjusted accordingly.

By the way, to give you a very good example, check out what

http://www.credible-finance.de is doing.

Social media chasm – Are we there yet?

Warum?

„New paradigm,…It’s like new sex. There just isn’t any such thing.“
